FAT and SAT testing on delivery of switchgear cabinets

Professional testing phase on delivery

FAT and SAT tests at switchboards are an important part of quality control before commissioning industrial control systems. These tests ensure that the electrical installation is fully functional and complies with applicable standards, such as NEN-EN 60204-1 and NEN-EN 61439. At Kwadrant IA, FAT and SAT tests are carefully performed as part of a structured delivery process with measurement reports and declarations of conformity. This provides assurance that each switchgear cabinet operates safely, reliably and to specification in the final operating environment.

Panel Building Pioneers for Mechanical Engineering

With the precision of a watchmaker and the agility of an acrobat, Kwadrant IA is committed to creating custom electrical panels for mechanical engineering. As a resilient player in panel building, we move quickly without sacrificing quality or durability. Step into our world of innovation and discover how we can take your mechanical engineering projects to the next level.

What are FAT and SAT tests

FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) and SAT (Site Acceptance Test) are quality checks that demonstrate that a switchgear cabinet is functioning correctly before commissioning. The FAT takes place at the manufacturer, where electrical functions, wiring and software configurations are tested according to the design. After installation on site, the SAT, which checks that the cabinet works properly with field equipment and the process environment. Both tests result in a test report and declaration of conformity, providing technical justification for delivery.

Important standards and guidelines

Kwadrant IA performs FAT and SAT testing In accordance with relevant European standards.

  • NEN-EN 61439: Describes the requirements for low voltage distributors and panel construction.
  • NEN-EN 60204-1: deals with electrical safety of machinery, including emergency stop circuits and insulation resistance.
  • NEN 1010: Deals with installation requirements for electrical systems.

Together, these standards form the basis for safe and reliable delivery. Kwadrant IA does not claim certifications, but works in accordance with these guidelines to demonstrate that each cabinet is technically compliant.

Applications in industry

FAT and SAT are found in almost all sectors in which Kwadrant IA operate:

  • Mechanical engineering: validation of control cabinets for production lines.
  • Food & logistics: testing of weighing and dosing systems.
  • Infrastructure & water management: inspections of distribution boxes for pumps and sluices.
  • Marine & offshore: functional test at critical control systems.

In every project, the tests provide assurance that installations will run reliably immediately upon commissioning.

A structured FAT/SAT offers practical advantages:

  • Risk reduction – errors are detected before placement.
  • Efficiency – Shorter start-up time on site.
  • Transparency – results recorded in test protocol.
  • Quality proof – test report and declaration of conformity included.

In addition, the process demonstrates that the cabinet was designed and built according to PL/SIL methodology, which is important in machine safety.

At Kwadrant IA, FAT and SAT are part of the overall panel construction process:

  1. Design: hardware according to NEN-EN 61439, software according to IEC 61131-3.
  2. Assembly: assembly and internal control in our own workshop.
  3. FAT: electrical and functional test, including communication via Profinet or Modbus.
  4. SAT: site recheck and verification of cabling and signals.
  5. Delivery: report and declaration of conformity for the customer.

The approach is systematic, supported by tools such as EPLAN P8 and Pro Panel, making every step traceable.

FAT and SAT are not a separate service, but an integral part of Quadrant IAs quality process. Each cabinet is tested in accordance with the applicable standards and delivered with clear documentation. Thus the customer not only gets a working system, but also assurance of safety, performance and compliance with technical requirements.

Industrial automation with international standards

Industrial automation requires more than just a correctly constructed panel. We start with the architecture of the system and make conscious choices in component selection, standardization and scalability. By fully mastering engineering, panel construction and integration, we realize control systems that perform reliably in demanding industrial environments. From modular construction to international compliance, every detail is focused on quality, longevity and manageable Total Cost of Ownership.

We do not build standard solutions, but technically sound systems that match the complexity of modern mechanical engineering.

Kwadrant IA as your partner for FAT and SAT testing

Kwadrant IA is your specialist for FAT and SAT testing of switchgear cabinets. We ensure that every cabinet is fully functional before delivery and complies with the applicable standards, such as NEN-EN 61439 and NEN-EN 60204-1. Our engineers carry out tests with measurement report and declaration of conformity, giving you assurance of quality and safety. With expertise in panel building, PLC/HMI software and industrial protocols such as Profinet and Modbus TCP, we support projects in mechanical engineering, infrastructure, food and offshore.

Frequently asked questions about FAT and SAT testing at control cabinets

The FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) takes place in the manufacturer’s workshop before transport and installation. Here it is checked that the switchgear functions as designed. The SAT (Site Acceptance Test) takes place on site, after the cabinet has been connected to the installation. This tests whether everything works properly with the field components.

They reduce the risk of commissioning failures. By testing in the factory and on site, faults are detected early. This prevents failure costs, speeds up delivery and increases system reliability.

Kwadrant IA test in accordance with NEN-EN 61439, NEN-EN 60204-1 and NEN 1010. These standards describe the safety and quality requirements for switchboards and electrical installations. The tests provide a test report and declaration of conformity as proof of compliance.

The report contains the results of the electrical and functional tests, including measurements, security function checks, communication tests and any discrepancies. It also states that the cabinet meets applicable standards and acceptance criteria.

Not legal, but in industrial projects it is strongly recommended. FAT and SAT demonstrate that the installation is operating safely and reliably. Especially in complex systems or export projects, this double testing phase is essential for quality assurance.
