In Dutch, it is called a \u201cprogrammeerbare logische besturing,\u201d and that name describes exactly what the device does: a control system whose logic is programmable rather than hardwired. <\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"42:1-42:317;1489-1805\">That distinction is at the heart of the technology. In a traditional relay control system, the logic is embedded in the wiring itself. If you want to change the machine\u2019s behavior, you have to open the control cabinet and rewire it. With a PLC control system, that logic is embedded in software. An adjustment then involves a program change, not a wiring job.    <\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"44:1-44:180;1807-1986\">In practice, the terms &#8220;PLC,&#8221; &#8220;PLC control,&#8221; and &#8220;control technology&#8221; are used interchangeably. At General Motors, they were hampered by relay cabinets that had to be rewired for every new model year. These cabinets used push buttons, indicator lights, timers, and circuits such as the star-delta circuit. Reliable, but inflexible: every change meant redesigning and rewiring.   <\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"50:1-50:417;2451-2867\">In 1968, Richard \u201cDick\u201d Morley developed the first programmable controller as a solution to that problem. The result was the Modicon 084, where Modicon stands for Modular Digital Controller. The programmable electrical controller thus became the alternative to traditional relay-based systems. Since then, PLCs have played a key role in the advancement of industrial automation.   <\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"52:1-52:386;2869-3254\">Over time, PLCs have become increasingly sophisticated and are available in many different models. This has been accompanied by improved processors, greater memory capacity, and more extensive communication capabilities. All in all, this enables a wider range of applications, such as the control of production lines, packaging and sorting machines, and the automation of buildings and infrastructure.  <\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"54:1-54:286;3256-3541\">Modern programmable logic controllers offer features such as real-time data analysis, integrated safety systems, and connectivity with other industrial systems via the Internet of Things. The hardware includes the sensors, the actuators, and the PLC itself, all of which are connected to the process.
